Texas A&M University vs. University of Texas. University of Michigan vs. Ohio State University. Duke University vs. University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. They make for great Thanksgiving games, and for good football (and other sports, but really football gets the most attention). We, as a nation, have grown up on rivalries and division. It defines us as Americans, and the fact that we don't riot at every game makes us different from the British. But the division is unhealthy in our politics, and Obama has urged us to be better, to be united as Americans. So I have a proposal for everyone of you liberal elite in the ivory towers across the nation (I know you are reading this). Let's overcome our traditional rivalries for Obama.
I am a Texan, proud to be one, but I am also a Democrat (hence my name). My family consists of several University of Texas alumni (Longhorns), and yet here I am, at their sworn rival, Texas A&M University. My wife is a Longhorn, I am an Aggie, and we both strongly support Obama.
I have made this proposal to my college Democrat association (there are very few of us), but I think it should spread to all campuses. See if you can get you campus Democrats to hold an event with the campus Democrats of your rival school. Meet in neutral territory somewhere in between campuses. Hold competitions such as tug of war, softball, touch football. Basically a field day. Highlight the constant battle between your schools, and yet you are united for Obama, and Obama can unite the nation. Hold a fundraiser, five out bumper stickers. This would also be a great opportunity for voter registration drives. I guarantee this would attract at least local news coverage, perhaps regional, or even national if the rivalry is strong enough. The advantage of doing this in the summer is it could even be planned as a weekend event, far from campus and students would show up. Shoot, if you can get in contact with the Obama campaign, they might even make some spokesman available for the event. We could get Chet Edwards! Whoop! Give it a shot!
